While navigating your way around may seem tricky at first (especially when landing at Narita Airport!), the kindness of the locals makes everything feel more approachable. They’re always eager to help, ensuring you feel right at home.

After my second trip to Japan, I realized there’s still so much to see, do, eat, and experience. Every moment brings unique encounters with locals, and there are countless funny and crazy memories to make. It’s the kind of place where you’ll want to explore 24/7, without a break, just taking in everything it has to offer. My advice? Get out and explore the cities and countryside. Whether you’re wandering through a busy street or discovering hidden gems off the beaten path, Japan’s surprises make every experience memorable.

One thing to keep in mind is the language barrier—it can be tricky. Not all locals speak English fluently, so my advice would be to learn some basic Japanese phrases before you go. That said, Japanese people are incredibly patient and appreciative if you make an effort to communicate, even if it’s just a few words.

When it comes to getting around, Japan’s public transportation system is one of the best in the world. It’s the most efficient way to travel from point A to point B, and it’s easy to navigate once you get the hang of it.

A couple of things you might find surprising: There aren’t many public trash bins, so it’s a good idea to carry a small bag with you to store your trash until you can find a bin. And while it’s possible to pay by card in many places, cash is still very much king in Japan. I highly recommend carrying cash with you, especially in smaller towns or at places like food stalls.

Another bonus? Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, so you can feel pretty safe walking around, even at night.

As for the weather, it can be quite extreme depending on when you visit. I’d recommend going in April or the beginning of summer, especially if you want to experience the beautiful cherry blossoms in full bloom. April is a must-visit month for this reason—it’s a magical time to be in Japan.
